I’m generally a wordpress user. I tried using joomla (a more advanced content management system), here’s what I found.
Joomla has a few nice features:
- Joomlas has a pretty advanced menu structure. The menus can link to pages, or categories, or RSS feeds, etc.
- Joomla has a lot more organization around posts and articles
- Joomlas has more control about page layout, depending on what “page” (actually menu item) you’re on.
But it is pretty complicated. I think this would look attractive compared to an old version of wordpress, but not so much compared to wordpress 3 and the 2010 theme:
- WordPress 3 and the 2010 theme has improved menus a lot. No longer are you restricted to simple pages – you can have a menu item link to a category or custom URL
- WordPress custom tags make up for the lack of modules that Joomla has. In particular, the list category tag allows all sorts of combination of articles on a static wordpress page.
- WordPress is still pretty weak about controlling when sidebar widgets appear. But maybe that’s a feature – it is consistent.
In summary, although Joomla has some nice features, the WordPress 2010 theme is “good enough” not to switch to Joomla.
